MF Opening Highlights…

Saturday night at A.S.S. / 5one6ix was great…  we hosted two extremely talented artists, drank some adult beverages, and ate some wicked tasty morsels…I recommend the tiny apple pies.

We had the opportunity to hang out with Martina and Frank Russo during the show (and after) and learned a little bit about what they’re in to, where they come from and that jig-saws are freaking awesome.

Gallery 2 - Martina Russo

Martina uses her jig-saw to cut out these severed limbs before painting them with a skin tone, then she paints the details later.

Sailor Girl - Martina Russo

B and I agreed that Sailor Girl is our favorite…

Monsterfaces - Frank Russo

Frank uses his jig-saw to cut these Monsterfaces out of wood…

Lava Skull - Frank Russo

then he paints the details using acrylics – Lava Skull is my favorite of these works…

This collection will be up at A.S.S / 5one6ix for the rest of the month… and some of the pieces are still available for purchase.  You can come by during the studio’s business hours to get a closer look and see the rest of the Russo’s amazing horror-pop influenced artwork.  To learn more about the Martina and Frank, check out this awesome blogpost.

Martina & Frank Russo – Opening April 30th

Art N Soul Studios & 5one6ix Gallery go Horror Pop

Next up at 5one6ix Gallery is Heads & Limbs, featuring the artwork of Martina and Frank Russo.  The artists opened their own place, MF Gallery, in Brooklyn in 2003, and in 2009 a second location in Genoa, Italy, where Martina was born.  The two artists plan to bring the best of their Horror Pop Underground style to Allentown – including a few of Martina’s life sized “pin-ups” and many of her tattooed severed limbs alongside some of Frank’s infamous “Monsterfaces” acrylic on wood cutouts and a select collection of his paintings, drawings and comic strips.

The gallery opening will be April 30th from 7pm until 10pm at 5one6ix Gallery inside ART N SOUL STUDIOS – at 516 W. Hamilton St. in Allentown.

As always, tasty snacks and adult beverages (21+) will be served – compliments of Dulce Vida Tequila, 5one6ix and A.S.S.

Come out and meet the artists, scope out their work, and relax with the A.S.S. crew.  While the show runs through May 26th, don’t miss the opportunity to hang out with the artists!

Rest In Peace

We art Art N Soul Studios would like to take a minute to morn the lose a very dear friend to us today, Konnik.

Konnik is an American artist based in New York. His artwork, best described as “abstract portraits” are imbued with religious symbolism. some subtle and some right out blatant, all evidence of his strict catholic upbringing. It is knows that his  main painting medium, knows as “sauce”, is a recipe only know to him, but has a base of acrylics or inks (depending on what he is painting on) dyes, and his blood. when asked about this ritual of using his own blood, he states “each piece is a literal piece of me”. With Konnik, nothing is safe, of scared, or innocent, it is a subject to be examined, and given new life as a piece in his world. His work is simply… thought provoking…

Not only was Konnik an amazing artist but he was an even more amazing human being. He brought us laughs and smiles. No matter what he was there to help us at any time of the day. We at Art N Soul Studios would like to now ask everyone’s help in celebrating the life of a truly extraordinary man. His artwork hangs in our gallery for anyone who would like to come and appreciate the dedication put into all of the pieces.

REST IN PEACE KONNIK. May you live on through your artwork and memories. You will be missed.

Eric Richardson & SIENIDE opening pictures

February 22, 2011

Hello everyone and welcome to another A.S.S. BLOG!

News at the studio this week…

It is set in stone that 5one6ix Gallery will be holding the next art opening on SATURDAY MARCH 12TH. The gallery opening will be starting at 7pm and doors will be closing at 10pm. Unlike the last event that we had a Crocodile Rock Cafe, this show will be held inside of ART N SOUL STUDIOS at 5one6ix Gallery located at 516 W. Hamilton St. Allentown.

5one6ix Gallery will be exhibiting the artwork of Eric Eyeball Richardson and Sienide.

Eric Eyeball Richardson was born in a small town in Northwest Indiana. As a young man, while out watching the corn grow, his imagination overtook his notebooks. With prompting, his studies illustration at the American Academy of Art (1996) and then fully re-located to Chicago.

In addition to becoming accomplished in over-sized set-design, Richardson exhibited public and commercial murals and sculptures both regionally and nationally. Combining these skills, a hell of a lot of left over childhood imaginings, and inspiration form the (ever popular) low brow art movement, he created what you see in his artwork.

As an artist, Richardson wants to encourage the viewer to follow the movement of paint and feel the radiating power that lies underneath vibrant color. A can of spilled paind and clobs of erratic color at a prop studio can inspire a new painting.

SIENIDE is an Artquarian who celebrates his birth date with Charles Darwin’s and Abraham Lincon’s birthdays on February 12th, 197Something. Born in the city of New York to Caribbean parents.

Documenting the streets of New York from and early age, SIEN’s life and art has been influenced by the graffiti, poverty, and the tuff love New York is know for. SIEN records his daily missions of life thorough a combination of mediums including illustration, graffiti, and a wide-range of multimedia. SIEN is an illustrator and a Professor currently teaching digital media arts at TCI College in New York City.

A re-instated writer since 2008, SIEN’s work as graced the rural walls of the Bronx, painting masterfully illustrated murals in neighborhoods where he spent most of his childhood years. With over a dozen public murals scattered within the five boroughs of NYC, SEIN’s work remains in public eye engaging a younger generation of street art enthusiasts with abstract compositions and mood altering color.
